  • Concatenation allows messages beyond the standard length to be merged as one single
    message.
  • Concatenated SMS feature is available subject to the recipient's mobile handset capability.
  • Concatenated SMS will be charged separately based on each SMS.
  • In general, a single message standard length is 160 characters for Roman messages, and
    70 characters for Unicode messages.
  • Concatenated messages are connected by a string called User Data Header (UDH).
  • UDH consumes a total of 7 characters for Roman messages, 3 characters for Unicode
    messages.
  • Note: By clicking enter in the MES GUI message body (be it Roman or Unicode) it takes up 2 character counts. Refer to below for special characters:
    1.) Symbol of ^, {, }, \, [, ~, ], |, € will be counted as 2 roman characters each or 1 unicode character each.
2.) Symbol € will be auto converted to character E and displayed as E at the receiver’s end.
3.) Symbol ` will be auto converted to symbol ‘ and displayed as ‘ at the receiver’s end.

  • UDH contains information on the concatenated messages, such as message type
(SMS), message length and so on.
  • For GUI access, a total of 1071 concatenated Roman characters and 380 concatenated Unicode characters are allowed.
  • Nonetheless, credits will be deducted accordingly based on the number of SMS sent.
  • Please refer to table 10.4.1-1 to identify the concatenation limits for MES GUI by country.
  • The examples shown in the following sub sections are applicable for GUI access only.

Note: Although the total unicode characters shown here is 335, users still have a buffer of up to 380 unicode characters depending on each country's Telco and handset capabilities.

10.4.2 Variation - Malaysia
  • Some rules and regulations for concatenation varies, depending on the Telco's
specification and requirement in each country.
  • For Malaysia, network operators will append a price indication of RM0.00<space>
automatically at the beginning of each message. This price indication is a mandatory
requirement and will consume a total of 7 characters from each message sent.
  • Only Celcom and Maxis are able to support concatenation.
  • Digi does not support concatenation. Messages beyond the standard length will not be
concatenated. Based on the message length, a single message would be delivered as
    multiple SMS.
  • For Malaysian numbers, the total characters allowed for concatenation is 1064 for Roman, while for Unicode is 328 characters. This is after the compulsory deduction of Price Indication and UDH characters. Note: There is No UDH deduction for U Mobile. Only price indication is supported.

10.4.4 Concatenation Limit by Country

Currently, the maximum characters supported per country can be referred to table. 10.4.4-1. The limitation of characters is basically dependent on the respective Telco/SMSC and is subject to change without prior notice whatsoever.

Please note that MACROKIOSK shall not be accountable for this information or changes. For general information on concatenation, please refer to the Bulk SMS Product Paper.

Table 10.4.4-1

The above table is applicable as of 13th November 2013.

  • Concatenation limit is up to Telco’s standard.
  • The character limits & features given above are not conclusive and may change according to Telco and handset capabilities.
  • Roman Characters above are calculated based on 153 characters (excluding *UDH 7 characters)
  • Unicode Characters above are calculated based on 67 characters (excluding *UDH 3 characters)
  • Please note that some Telco may not apply *UDH, therefore the number of characters allowed may differ.
  • *UDH refers to User Data Header. UDH's function is to join messages more than 160 characters long. User Data Header contains information on the message type, the length of a message, concatenation and more.
  • The rule of the thumb for MES GUI character limitation is 1071 characters for Roman and 380 for Unicode.

Note:
(i)    Clients need to be aware of the maximum SMS/characters supported at the recipient’s country.
(ii)    SMS that has exceeded in character limit might be truncated or split into different messages         (Telco dependent), and credits deducted accordingly.
(iii)   MACROKIOSK shall not entertain any REFUND request due to case (ii)
(iv)   The ability to receive 7 SMS is handphone dependent.
(v)    Korea has a SMS limitation of up to 80 bytes per SMS. This is approximately 80 Roman         characters or 40 Unicode characters. This could be due to Korean handphone  version         limitations.
